Shapeshifter

You have the opportunity to be reborn into a new world, escaping your horrible life as a stressed-out employee in a large company. However, this new world may be just as hostile as the old one, or even worse...

Turn left, since you see a downhill path that should be easier

You continue advancing for hours without rest. You barely take the time to check that your bandages remain properly placed and applying enough pressure to your wound. You are thirsty and didn't bring any water with you.

Dawn begins to break, and with the light, you manage to spot what appears to be a traveler's inn. You see various mounts tied up outside, and people coming and going from the establishment.

You approach and enter. The inn is lively inside, packed with travelers. You even notice people carrying strange objects that, according to the knowledge surfacing in your mind, seem to be magical items like staffs, wands, and other artifacts that amplify their bearer's magical power.

Once inside, a small red humanoid approaches you. If you remember correctly, that's a kobold, a sort of small draconic creature.

He asks if you'd like a table, to which you agree, and offers you a varied menu of food and drink options. You order everything you can, water, beer, chicken, potatoes, soup, bread, whatever, you're parched and starving after so many hours of fleeing, and exhausted.

When the food and drinks arrive, you eat and drink your fill until you end up falling asleep right at the table.

You wake up and realize the sunlight is gone outside, it seems you've spent the entire day sleeping at the table, and no one disturbed your rest.

However, once awake, a waiter approaches and brings you the bill. No matter the price of everything you've consumed, the truth is you don't have a single coin to your name...

You come clean, asking for forgiveness, explaining you have no way to pay, and if you could perhaps work off the debt by washing dishes or performing any other task...

They ask what skills you have, and you respond with complete naturalness: "Well, I can take the form of other humanoids."

This answer seems particularly intriguing to your interlocutor, who replies enthusiastically, "I have the perfect job for someone with your abilities... I just need you to take on a small form, like a halfling, goblin, gnome, dwarf, something like that."

You say that's fine, but you mention you have a wound that needs treating before you can perform any work.

Your conversation partner leaves, telling you to wait while he fetches something.
